A Life Behind the Lens: A Message from Garrick Dostine the owner and founder of The School Photographer

In celebrating our milestone year of 40years, I find myself reflecting on our journey.

In 1981, I was all set to embark on an overland trip through Europe when a unique opportunity stopped me in my tracks: a job traveling the state with a school photography company. I decided to cancel my trip and dive into the work. After five years of learning the ropes, I launched my own venture in 1986—originally called Class Photography—which eventually grew into The School Photographer.

Why “The School Photographer”? Because no one could remember Class Photography, but every time I went to my local supermarket a child would say to their parent, “Look it’s the School Photographer” so I thought why not, and the rest is history.

My parents always hoped I would become a teacher or a principal. While I took a different path, I like to think I’ve fulfilled their aspirations by spending the last four decades supporting school communities. Today, we are proud to be a nationwide company, though I think my parents would still find our scale hard to believe!

We believe in supporting the entire education sector, not just “cherry-picking” certain areas. Whether it’s a tiny rural school, a large metropolitan campus, or a specialist setting for students with behavioural or additional needs, we are there. Our staff strives to mirror the values of the educators we work alongside every day.

Giving back is at the heart of what we do. From funding school projects and marketing services to sponsoring national principal development and charities like the NSW-based Anxiety Project, we are committed to investing in the future of our students.
