Establishing an Indigenous language program
Our last article looked at the issue of teachers feeling unprepared to teach to indigenous curriculum; this article from Teacher Magazine looks at a great example of a school taking on an indigenous language with great results.
Sharon Case is the Head of Curriculum and Japanese Language Teacher at Mossman State School in north Queensland and was recently recognised for her outstanding work in developing an Indigenous language program at the primary school through extensive collaboration with their Indigenous community.
All students now learn the local language, Kuku Yalanji, which was at risk of being lost, with only the Indigenous elders being able to speak it fluently. The introduction of this program has seen improvements in student attendance, behaviour and achievement and a stronger understanding of Indigenous culture has been developed.
