Want to improve children’s media literacy? Start by strengthening your own

Do you ever worry about the amount of time your kids spend using digital media? Or perhaps your main concern is whether they are capable of identifying authentic information and managing their online identity, privacy and security.

With kids today spending more time using digital media than ever, it’s hardly surprising that parental concerns about the internet are rising.

Despite increasing concerns, however, parents are in some ways becoming less likely to moderate their children’s activities online.

Moderating children’s media use is absolutely necessary, of course, but another equally important part of media literacy is the ability to understand the nuances of media and question the messages it sends.

And how can we pass this all-important 21st century skill on to our children if we aren’t leading by example?

The discussion of digital media literacy tends to focus disproportionately on children and young people, but the reality is that many adults today didn’t grow up with digital media and aren’t accustomed to questioning what they read, see and hear online.
