About our school
St Paul’s is located on the western side of the historic Pentridge Village, on Sydney Road, Coburg an inner northern suburb. The school has recently undergone a learning space and playground redevelopment. These new spaces ensure the school provides working and play spaces that meet the many needs of a contemporary Catholic Primary School community.
Many of the students are from the local area although some come from neighbouring and outer Northern suburbs. What truly sets our school apart is our inner-city location, offering access to a wide variety of community resources that enrich learning every day. Our school’s location gives us great access to places like Coburg Lake, Merri Creek parklands, and Coburg Library. We actively engage with these facilities, including nearby sporting clubs, tennis courts, ovals, and playgrounds, to inspire a love of learning and show students that learning doesn’t just happen inside the classroom, but through real-life experiences that help develop skills and healthy habits.Located close to the city, our students have convenient access to public transport, with trams and trains nearby. This makes it easy to organise excursions to museums, galleries, theatres, and other cultural experiences that complement our curriculum and offer valuable learning beyond the classroom.
At St Paul’s, we use a Structured Literacy approach to teaching reading through Systematic Synthetic Phonics. In Prep, students begin their reading journey with single letter sound correspondences, using the Little Learners Love Literacy program.
In Years 1 and 2, our language and literacy curriculum follows a carefully designed scope and sequence that progresses to digraphs, trigraphs, and more complex letter combinations, supported by the InitialLit program from the MultiLit suite.
From Years 3 to 6, literacy learning focuses on developing language comprehension skills by building background knowledge and expanding vocabulary to enhance reading understanding. Grammar, spelling, and reading fluency are explicitly taught.
Reading fluency and vocabulary development are central to our Literature Studies, where students engage with a variety of novel studies.
Writing instruction at St Paul’s begins with sentence-level skills and gradually extends to paragraph and full-text writing. Handwriting and keyboarding skills are explicitly taught to support students’ written communication.
Oral language is the foundation of literacy, and the development of receptive and expressive language skills is central to our approach.
Teachers foster oral language growth by modelling correct grammatical structures and providing rich opportunities for students to listen, process, and express their ideas confidently.
At St Paul’s, we are committed to high-impact learning in mathematics. Using the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics 2.0 as our foundation, we have developed a comprehensive scope and sequence that outlines the essential concepts every student needs to master. Our curriculum is carefully designed to be consistent while also differentiated and personalized to meet each student’s unique learning needs, ensuring all learners can access and engage with the content confidently.
Students participate in approximately five hours of focused mathematics instruction each week.
Monitoring High-Impact Mathematics Learning
We continually assess students’ skills, knowledge, and competencies to guide informed and effective teaching practices. Our approach includes Formative Assessment: Ongoing checks and pre- and post-unit tests. We maintain consistency and track student progress.Summative Assessment: Twice-yearly assessments evaluate students’ knowledge and understanding over time and provide detailed insights into each student’s achievements, supporting consistent reporting and driving best teaching practices.
Our Whole School Instructional Model
Our mathematics teaching follows a structured approach that includes:
● Daily Review
● Explicit Instruction (whole group, fully guided)
● Targeted Reteaching
● Teacher-Led Focus Groups
● Independent Learning Activities
This model ensures all students receive the support and challenge they need to succeed in mathematics.
