St James is part of the Parish of St John the Evangelist Mitcham, reflecting its connection through its name to St John’s, as the two saints were brothers. Established in 1970 with 82 students from Prep to Grade 2 and led by the Sisters of St Joseph, the school has grown to around 350 students across 14 classes from Prep to Year 6, with two straight classes in each year level.
Located at 51 Centre Road, Vermont, the school features spacious grounds, including an oval, playgrounds, gardens, farmyard, netball courts, and a central quadrangle for assemblies. Facilities include three main buildings, a multipurpose community centre, a modern resource centre, and a new administration building that highlights its Catholic identity.
The curriculum emphasises Religious Education, Literacy, and Numeracy, alongside specialist subjects such as Physical Education, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Auslan, and STEM. Students can also participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, including music, clubs, choir, and sports.
St James is guided by its vision, “learning to love and loving to learn,” with a focus on developing the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually into flourishing learners. As part of a strong parish community, the school promotes Catholic values and a sense of belonging for all.
Strong partnerships with parents support student learning and contribute to the school’s positive reputation in academic, sporting, and arts areas. With dedicated staff and an engaged community, St James provides a supportive and challenging environment where students can thrive.

At St James, we strive to live out our Vision. We aim to promote within our students, indeed all our community members, a love for learning. Our concern at St James is to educate the whole person. The religious, social, academic, physical and emotional aspects of our students are vitally important and we endeavour to have each child reach their potential.
As part of a strong, vibrant Parish community, we strive to ensure our faith is nourished. The values of the Gospel are the mainspring of all we do. We hope there is a strong sense of belonging for each member of our community.
Our staff are highly professional, dedicated, motivated and committed to the task of supporting each student. We acknowledge also that parents make a vital and valuable contribution to the education of their child/ren and to this end we wish to work closely in partnership with you in the education of your child. Together we aim to deliver an education of the highest quality.
