About our school
Our Lady of the Assumption School is situated in the Peninsula Zone in Cheltenham. It was established as a church/school in 1951 with an enrolment of 80 students and staffed by the Brigidine Sisters. At this time Cheltenham was part of the Highett parish. In 1958 the separate parish of Cheltenham was formed. During 1998 OLA celebrated the anniversary of forty years as a parish. The school is seen as an integral part of the community.
Our Lady of the Assumption is a suburban school situated off the Nepean Highway on Centre-Dandenong Road. We have a current enrolment of approximately 500 students. Our buildings consist of fifteen permanent and three relocatable classrooms, an extensive Resource Centre with a computer lab, a performing arts room, a visual art department and a multi-purpose assembly area. There are two halls available for parish and school use. Our Lady’s has well-maintained facilities and grounds with a well-designed adventure playground.
At Our Lady of the Assumption our religious education program is of the utmost importance and permeates the whole curriculum. It gives our students a basis for evaluating the norms and values of society. The staff at Our Lady of the Assumption is highly motivated, enthusiastic and committed to providing an exciting, attractive and productive learning environment. We provide a broad and challenging Prep to Year 6 curriculum to meet the needs of all students.
The Curriculum and Standards Framework II provides the basis for curriculum planning through the eight key learning areas. Our co-curricular programs support our philosophy of a holistic and comprehensive education: the CLaSS literacy program; Japanese; a sequential information and computer skills program; Reading Recovery; student welfare support; a swimming program; a school camp; transition to secondary school; Stop-Think-Do social skills; protective behaviours; PMP; a Student Council; parent education programs; Year 6 leadership; a school choir and a band; chess and stamp clubs. The OLA community supports our school on the Education Board, Dad’s Army and our Parent Association.

Principal's Message
Welcome to Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) Primary School, Cheltenham. We are a Child Safe school promoting the safety, wellbeing and inclusion of all children. We are located 20km south of the centre of Melbourne. We are proud of our Catholic faith and tradition and this underpins all areas of school life as evidenced by relationships, language and rituals. The connection with our parish is strong and this reputation is highly valued in the wider community.
We enjoy a strong sense of community, with this being one of our greatest strengths at OLA. The teachers have a deep understanding of their students as individuals and of their personalities and this knowledge is used to engage the students to thrive and to be their best.
At OLA Primary School we are a community dedicated to creating a collaborative culture of learning where children learn to problem solve and think critically and creatively. Our teachers are passionate about children, learning and life and we know that good relationships are at the heart of good teaching. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards in Literacy and Numeracy whilst nurturing the wellbeing of each student.
At OLA we enjoy a positive and welcoming culture where we celebrate strengths and promote a growth mindset. We are about modelling and forming positive habits of thought, speech and behaviour. Celebration, rhythm and structure are at the heart of school life at OLA. We believe in creating happy memories and we do this through providing exciting and enjoyable class, year level and whole school events.
We aim to nurture gratitude, empathy, mindfulness and strong connections within our community. From day to day we reflect on what has worked well which allows us to build on successes and continue to improve. We want our students to flourish and reach their potential by knowing and using their strengths and building on them. We want our students to identify and follow their passions and learn how to make a difference in the world. We aim to bring about the best in each student, enabling all to achieve the highest goals possible.
You are very welcome to visit OLA – please make a time to meet with me and have a school tour of our great school.
