Star of the Sea College, Brighton VIC – Champions of Change

As the threat of COVID-19 became a reality in mid-March, the Performing Arts team at Star of the Sea College were proactive in reviewing our Performing Arts Calendar and looking at ways to reconfigure our events. The instrumental teachers displayed amazing flexibility and were able to adapt to online teaching quickly, which also meant our many ensembles could continue, albeit in a virtual sense. Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, our Senior Production of ‘Chicago: High School Edition’ had to be postponed and eventually cancelled. However, through exploring various online platforms we were able to deliver our annual piano, choral and junior music concerts as well as streamed productions for our Year 10 Drama class and Year 11 Theatre Studies class. We instigated an online Theatre Sports Festival to replace our Drama Festival, which we streamed into homeroom periods to keep the House competition alive. All of this innovation culminated in our end of year Presentation Evening showcasing the many positives of our year as well as the resilient, determined and optimistic attitude of our student body. Whilst the delivery of Performing Arts has changed, its core element of communicating and connecting with our audience and community has, and will continue to, prosper throughout 2021.
