PROJECT COMPASSION 2025: Unite Against Poverty this Lent, with Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion
Each year, Caritas Australia’s Lenten campaign, Project Compassion, brings together thousands of Australians to stand in solidarity with the world’s most vulnerable communities, to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.
Hundreds of schools take part annually, but this Lent, we’re inviting you, as parents and family members to take part as well!
For Project Compassion 2025, we are called to Unite Against Poverty and become a profound force for change. A force that partners with the world’s most vulnerable to stand against poverty. As individuals we can have a powerful impact – but when we come together through Project Compassion, our good becomes great. Our combined kindness becomes amplified. And when we unite with each other – and with people living in poverty – we can create BIG, lasting change.
This year, as always, we will be sharing several stories. They represent just a fraction of the work supported by Project Compassion.
First, there is the story of Toefuata’iga (pronounced Toy-foo-ah-tah-ing-ah) from Samoa, whose primary school overcame severe water shortages through the support of Caritas Australia. Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, her school now has access to a sustainable water supply, improving the health and education of her entire community.
Then there is the story of Lam, a young man from rural Vietnam who has lived with the challenges of short stature, a disability that often led to societal stigma and limited opportunities. Through Caritas Australia’s support, he accessed education and vocational training that allowed him to overcome these barriers. Today, Lam is thriving and inspiring others in his community to see that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has something valuable to offer.
And finally, there is Irene from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In a country plagued by instability and poverty, Irene faced immense challenges in her life. But with the help of Caritas Australia and its local partners, she was able to gain new skills that empowered her to provide for her family and build a more stable life. Her story is one of hope and transformation – a testament to the profound impact of your generosity.
Through Project Compassion at school, your child will experience the power of compassion, generosity, and faith in action. They’ll hear these inspiring stories of hope from around the world, participate in meaningful fundraising and awareness activities, and connect deeply with the Lenten spirit. Educational initiatives will nurture their empathy, strengthen their faith, and encourage a desire to make a positive difference in the world.
As a parent, this is your chance to stand alongside them, demonstrating the transformative power of collective action.
How? By joining them in their journey! This year, Project Compassion invites parents and families to Unite Against Poverty during Lent. By getting involved, you’ll not only deepen your own spiritual journey, but you’ll also demonstrate the strength of a united family effort. Imagine how inspiring it will be for your child to see their parent actively participating in the same cause they care so much about!
How can you get involved?
- Sign up for The Long Walk for Water: Commit to walking every day during Lent (40 days) in solidarity with the 292 million people who walk more than 30 minutes each day to collect clean, safe drinking water. This walking challenge is a tangible way for you to reflect and stand with those who walk every day just to access basic necessities like water.
Will YOU step up this Lent? - Or why not sign up to Give it up for Lent: Lead by example this Lent and give up something meaningful- like coffee, takeaway meals, or screen time! You can also use it as an opportunity to raise funds for people living in poverty around the world. Small sacrifices can lead to big changes!
What will YOU give up this Lent?
Every step you take, every sacrifice you make, every dollar you raise will help create lasting change for vulnerable communities. Your involvement in Project Compassion 2025 will demonstrate that faith is not only personal but also a call to action—a chance for us to make a tangible difference in the world.
