Our Lady of Mercy College (OLMC), Heidelberg VIC – Building Resilience

As we continue navigating a changing world we are so proud of how well our students are demonstrating their growing resilience. They have continued to reach out to each other and to ‘show up’, even at times when it would have been easier to give up. Our students have shown this through their focus on kindness, rising by lifting others and creating fun in di”cult times – from podcasts to masked singer online events and creative online activities – they have continued to maintain a sense of community in times of uncertainty. As a College we seek to build resilience in young people by maintaining a well-established and crucial relationship between wellbeing and learning success. Students are supported to demonstrate their commitment to their own personal excellence and continuous improvement and to challenge themselves through social action,
community engagement and participation in a variety of activities. Our broad curriculum, Year 9 Horizon program, focus on design thinking and collaboration, STEAM program, Arts opportunities, formal and informal leadership and student voice opportunities, and strong commitment to sport all allow our students to demonstrate the skills so critical to their lives ahead and beyond OLMC – adaptability, flexibility patience, respect and the ability to deal constructively with uncertainty. They are building resilience. They know that building resilience doesn’t mean that you won’t experience difficult life events, but rather that you are better able
to cope with them when they do occur – they can adapt to change and approach difficulties and challenges as
constructively as possible.
