Mazenod College, Mulgrave VIC – Champions of Change

Mazenod College is established as a College for Boys in the Oblate Charism. The quote from St Eugene de Mazenod on the wall of the College Chapel challenges all members of our College Community to “Know who we are in the eyes of God”. Our strategic plan for 2020 to 2024 acknowledges our traditions but recognises we are in a period of transition and change. We are meeting the needs of contemporary learning which includes access to technology; the development of buildings and facilitates, and the nurturing of vocationally relevant skills, especially focussing on STEAM. We continue to empower our greatest resources, the teachers and educational support staff who provide a positive and dynamic environment for learning.

Our strategic plan focusses on Visible Wellbeing, Visible Learning and Data-Driven responses to the educational needs of our students. Gathering accurate information enables us to establish an explicit agenda for learning and teaching. Our history of excellence across the curriculum will be maintained. Consistently half our students achieve ATARs in the top 20% of the state. While the College prides itself on academic rigour and excellence it also recognises the need for our students to develop the emotional intelligence and positive psychology to flourish in a changing workplace and society.

Our Visible Wellbeing and Visible Learning approach intentionally challenge students to work independently and be learners for life. The skills acquired as they navigate the extensive cocurricular programmes of Sport, Music, Public Speaking and Debating, Outdoor Education and Social Justice have always been of enormous benefit and are of intrinsic value to our students. Lea Waters’ research and programmes into Positive Psychology enable us to recognise the Science of Wellbeing and the Science of Learning to help students and staff to more clearly see their own and others’ wellbeing using visible wellbeing practices which are applied in all contexts and across any subject matter.

The College has very strong connections with the broader Mazenod Community. Our Old Collegians Association called MOCA has been established to foster relationships with students beyond their years at the College. Connections in business as well as on the sporting fields and on the stage enable our students to continue wonderful relationships. With changes to workplaces and greater pressures on young people, there has never been a more important time to consciously develop and protect community connections and relationships. Our Old Collegian network is very strong and supportive and provides stability and direction to our young men.

The main point of difference and our greatest asset is our clear vision of who we are and what we stand for. The Oblates of Mary Immaculate have always been explicit in the purpose of our College. Eucharist and the teaching of the Gospel message is the essence of our College and to understand who we are in an Oblate context is the gift that will enable our students to navigate a changing world but understand what is always fundamentally important
