Kilbreda College, Mentone VIC – Building Resilience
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. It is a form of ‘ordinary magic’ that allows us to cope with the ups and downs of life. The inner strength and spirit that encompasses resilience is a focus of our whole-school approach to Positive Education and is grounded in our College values. It is guided by our mission to foster and promote the wellbeing of every individual so that they may flourish emotionally, spiritually, socially, physically and academically. Our students understand the place of struggle and perseverance in moving forward and building strength and resilience. Our teachers support our students to develop a resilient mindset that will help them deal with challenges by equipping them with strategies to solve problems for themselves, cultivating the dispositions of optimism, grit and compassion for others and helping them to discover their personal strengths and how to harness them. At each year level, we have developed specific, age appropriate programs to strengthen student resilience, promote positive coping strategies, nurture a positive self-view, adopt a positive outlook and to empower our students to embrace a willingness for challenge and adventure. Students are provided with a range of innovative and dynamic educational experiences both within and beyond the classroom that focus on transferable skills such as adaptability, resilience, problem solving and
communication. These experiences and our approaches to intentionally cultivating a resilient mindset encourage our students to always look forward with hope and optimism and motivate them to be courageous,
resilient, life-long learners who always act in a spirit of Strength and Kindliness.
